Sansevieria cylindrica Sansevieria Cylindrica 12 cm mixed in Jackie (Neo Architect-coll.)

Sansevieria cylindrica, commonly known as the Cylindrical Snake Plant or African Spear Plant, is a unique and hardy houseplant. Here’s how to grow and care for Sansevieria cylindrica:

1. Light: Sansevieria cylindrica can adapt to a wide range of light conditions, but it thrives in bright, indirect light. It can tolerate lower light levels, but growth may be slower. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves.

2. Temperature: Maintain temperatures between 70-90°F (21-32°C) during the growing season. These plants can tolerate slightly cooler temperatures, but they are sensitive to cold drafts and frost. Keep them away from drafts and cold windows during winter.

3. Watering: Sansevieria cylindrica is drought-tolerant and prefers to dry out between waterings. Water sparingly, allowing the top inch of soil to dry before watering again. Be cautious not to overwater, as root rot can occur in consistently damp soil.

4. Soil: Use well-draining potting mix. A cactus or succulent mix is suitable, or you can amend regular potting soil with perlite or sand to improve drainage.

5. Pot Selection: Choose a pot with drainage holes to prevent water from accumulating at the bottom, which can lead to root rot.

6. Fertilization: Sansevieria cylindrica doesn’t require frequent fertilization. Feed it with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer at half strength during the growing season (spring and summer) every 4-6 weeks. Avoid fertilizing during the dormant period in winter.

7. Humidity: Sansevieria cylindrica is adaptable to normal indoor humidity levels. It doesn’t require additional humidity unless your indoor air is extremely dry.

8. Repotting: Repot your Sansevieria cylindrica when it becomes root-bound or outgrows its container. This is typically done every 2-3 years. Choose a slightly larger pot when repotting.

9. Pruning: Prune off any damaged or yellowing leaves at their base using clean, sharp scissors or pruning shears.

10. Pests and Diseases: Sansevieria cylindrica is generally resistant to pests and diseases. However, keep an eye out for common houseplant pests like mealybugs or spider mites, and address any issues promptly.

Sansevieria cylindrica is a resilient and low-maintenance houseplant. Its striking cylindrical leaves make it a unique addition to your indoor plant collection.
