Dwarf French Bean 'Record' is a well-known, high-yielding heritage bush variety. It produces compact, self-supporting plants that yield dense clusters (trusses of 4 to 5) of fleshy, round, completely stringless green pods with an exceptional flavor. Because it is a bush bean, it does not require trekking structures or stakes, making it ideal for small garden spaces, raised beds, or patio containers.
☀️ Light & Temperature
- Sunlight: Requires full sun in a warm, sheltered location protected from strong winds.
-
Temperature: Beans are highly sensitive to frost and cold. Soil temperatures should be at least 15°C–18°C (59°F–64°F) for successful outdoor germination.
🌱 Sowing & Spacing
- Early Sowing: Start seeds indoors or under glass from mid-April in pots or trays. Move them outdoors only after all danger of frost has passed in mid-to-late May.
- Direct Outdoor Sowing: Sow directly into the ground from mid-May to early July. Plant seeds 4 cm (1.5 inches) deep.
-
Spacing: Space seeds 10 cm (4 inches) apart in rows that are 40 cm (16 inches) apart.
💧 Soil & Water Care
-
Soil Requirements: Plant in light, fertile, well-draining soil heavily amended with rich compost or well-rotted manure.
-
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Thirst increases drastically once the plants begin flowering and forming pods; water deeply at the roots twice a week during dry spells.
- Support: Staking is generally unnecessary. However, inserting short, twiggy sticks between the bushes can help keep the heavy clusters of pods completely off wet soil.
