Ficus benjamina Ficus nitida P30,1 cutting(s)/pot

Ficus benjamina, commonly known as the Weeping Fig, and Ficus nitida, also called Indian Laurel Fig, are two different species of Ficus. Each has its own care requirements, but I’ll provide some general guidelines for growing both:

Materials You’ll Need:

• Ficus benjamina and/or Ficus nitida plants
• Suitable pot or container with drainage holes (if growing in a container)
• Well-draining potting mix (suitable for houseplants or trees)
• Fertilizer for houseplants or trees
• Watering can or hose
• Pruning shears (for maintenance)

For Ficus benjamina (Weeping Fig):

1. Light: Place your Ficus benjamina in bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some direct sunlight, especially morning sun, but avoid harsh, afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves. Adequate light is essential for its growth.

2. Temperature: Keep the temperature between 65°F to 80°F (18°C to 27°C). Protect the plant from cold drafts and temperatures below 50°F (10°C).

3. Pot Selection (if growing in a container): Choose a pot or container with drainage holes to prevent waterlogging. Repot your Ficus benjamina when it has outgrown its current container.

4. Potting Mix (if growing in a container): Use a well-draining potting mix suitable for houseplants. Good aeration and drainage are essential for the plant’s health.

5. Watering: Water your Ficus benjamina when the top inch of the soil feels dry. Water thoroughly but allow excess water to drain from the pot. Reduce watering during the dormant season (fall and winter).

6. Fertilization: Feed your Ficus benjamina with a balanced liquid fertilizer for houseplants every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Dilute the fertilizer to half strength to prevent over-fertilization.

7. Pruning and Maintenance: Prune your Ficus benjamina as needed to remove dead or yellowing leaves and to maintain its shape. Be cautious while pruning, as the plant’s sap can be irritating to the skin.

8. Protection: Keep your Ficus benjamina away from drafts, air conditioning, and heating vents, as they can lead to dry and damaged leaves.

For Ficus nitida (Indian Laurel Fig):

1. Light: Ficus nitida prefers full sun to part shade. It can tolerate direct sunlight, making it a suitable choice for outdoor planting in well-lit areas.

2. Temperature: Ficus nitida can tolerate a wider temperature range compared to Ficus benjamina. Protect it from severe frost.

3. Planting (for outdoor use): In outdoor settings, choose a well-draining spot and plant your Ficus nitida at the same depth as it was in its nursery container. Water it thoroughly after planting.

4. Watering: Water your Ficus nitida regularly, keeping the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, especially during hot, dry spells. Established trees are more drought-tolerant.

5. Fertilization: Fertilize your Ficus nitida with a balanced tree fertilizer in the spring and early summer. Follow the package instructions for application rates.

6. Pruning and Maintenance: Prune your Ficus nitida as needed to remove dead or overgrown branches and to maintain the desired shape.

Both Ficus benjamina and Ficus nitida are popular choices for indoor and outdoor cultivation, respectively, and can provide a lush, green addition to your living space or garden.
